Privacy Policy for Class Retriever
Last Updated: July 11, 2025
Class Retriever (“we,” “us,” or “our”) values your privacy very highly and is committed to protecting the personal information of both parents and students. Please read this Privacy Policy carefully before using the Class Retriever App or Website, operated by Smart Data Apps, a Limited Liability Company located in Missoula, Montana, USA.
This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect the data you provide when using our mobile application (“App”) and website (“Website”).
By using the Class Retriever App and Website, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this policy.
1) Information We Collect in the App
a. Marketing Data
As part of the user onboarding process, Class Retriever asks each user to share how they heard about Class Retriever, to help Smart Data Apps understand where to invest in future marketing efforts.
b. User and Student Data
Class Retriever only collects the student data that is necessary for users to see a student’s assignments, assignment due dates, and assignment submission statuses.
Class Retriever data resides in two different areas:
i. Firebase
Class Retriever utilizes Firebase, a backend-as-a-service platform from Google that leverage’s Google’s robust security features. Firestore databases on Firebase encrypt (in transit and at rest) and maintain User Name, User Email, Student Name (which is created by the user), Student Email, and Google Authorization Token data.
ii. The User’s Mobile Device
Google OAuth protocols require every student to grant each user’s requested access to view the student’s Google Classroom data.
Once Google OAuth permissions are granted by the student using Google protocols, Class Retriever facilitates the messaging of the following information from Google Classroom directly to the user’s device: Course, Assignment, Assignment Due Date, and Assignment Submission Status (Submitted or Unsubmitted).
Class Retriever’s databases do not hold nor maintain any student’s Google Classroom data.
2) How We Use Information We Collect in the App
The purpose for each type of data that is collected, and where it is stored, is as follows:
Data on Class Retriever (Firebase) Servers | Purpose |
---|---|
User Name | This is the user’s self-assigned name that they input when they create their account. |
User Email | Each user’s email address is collected during onboarding to be used in the future as part of the log-in process.
The email address will be used for user communications from Class Retriever or Smart Data Apps where necessary. Each user’s email address is validated during onboarding before the account set-up can be finished. |
Student Name | Once a user has created their account, they are asked to input a name for the student whose Google Classroom assignment data they will want to see. |
Student Email | The user is asked to input a student email address, which is then contacted directly by Class Retriever to request that permission be actively granted, from the student, for a Class Retriever-Google Classroom connection. |
Google Authorization Token | This is the unique token that is issued by Google to enable approved third-party applications to obtain limited access to a Google solution’s data. |
Data on User’s Mobile Device Upon Successful Google Authorization | Purpose |
---|---|
Course | Class Retriever relays and presents course data from the Google Classroom API that defines the course (AP English, Algebra, etc.) for which a student has received an assignment. This data is used to help organize assignment data by the class for which it has been assigned. |
Assignment | Class Retriever relays and presents the title of each assignment from the Google Classroom API to define the specific assignment that has been made to the student. |
Assignment Due Date | Class Retriever relays and presents the due date from the Google Classroom API that specifies when the assignment is due. |
Assignment Submission Status | Class Retriever relays and presents the status of the assignment as being submitted or not in Google Classroom using the Google Classroom API. |
Class Retriever does not use student data for marketing, behavioral targeting, non-educational profiling, or for any other purposes than stated above.
